Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha/8 starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A round of wagering follows where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The players will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of entrants often get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use exactly three cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical concept in nearly every poker game.

The low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

While it seems difficult initially, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha hi lo offers an exciting collection of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have many individuals trying for the high hand, and several battling for the low hand. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
