Wednesday, 1. March 2023
Phil Ivey has been referred to as the number one poker player on the planet by most of the top professionals. Phil Ivey was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before reaching the age of 1. His grandpa taught Phil one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup anything he possibly could about the game. He routinely would tell his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil did not allow the adverse comments from others annihilate his goal of becoming one of the best poker players on the planet.
He started competing seriously after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his techniques at the casinos in Atlantic City. The initial few years for him were a teaching opportunity and winning wasn’t a common outcome at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved two final tables and came away with his first WSOP bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the last table he destroyed a number of the well known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil made a decision to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Sin City. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Ivey credits his success to hard work and an immeasurable passion for the game of poker. He states that he is learning every day and is incredibly humble about his success. He admits to making errors in each session of poker and always strives to get better.
Although Ivey has come first in some big-time tournaments, he likes destroying cash games on a regular basis.
