Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he loved taking part in numerous card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming really aggressive in these card games while playing his dad. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little bit and headed to New York to participate in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were difficult as he would play many hours and lose a majority of the time. He made some extra money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he might boost his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and concentrate more on poker.

The definite advancement in his game happened when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would often wager against each other. Howard was able to access some of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard would hone his logical thinking skills. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL hold’em.

He also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct decision. He told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the greatest female players the poker arena today. Howard relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the following decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
