Omaha Hi Lo: General Outline
Saturday, 4. April 2020
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The players will need to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of players get confused. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same concept in nearly every poker game.
A lower hand is more complex, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the entire pot.
It may seem complicated at the start, after a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of the game easily enough. Since you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha Hi-Lo offers an amazing assortment of wagering options and owing to the fact that you have several individuals shooting for the high hand, and many trying for the low. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to play Omaha High-Low.
