Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he enjoyed participating in various card games when he was young. He found himself becoming really aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was playing his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little bit and moved to New York to compete in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were rough as he would play extensive hours and lose a majority of the time. He made some extra cash by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he might improve his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more rest and focus more on the game.
The real improvement in his skills began when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would frequently play against each other. He had access into a few of the best minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would tweak his strategic thinking skills. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL texas hold’em.
He also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was a superb student of the game as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct choice. He told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the greatest female players the poker arena today. Howard relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the next 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
